Travel day.

Today is Friday, May 18th, but thanks to the magic of international air travel, Thursday and Friday have seemed to blend into one "mega-day," if you will. It's currently around 3pm here in Berlin, Germany, and it's 9am back home. I slept very little on the flight, but more than some of my fellow travelers. I'm very proud of all of us because in spite of our weariness we seem to be functioning rather well, and even enjoying ourselves. So far, Berlin is way beyond my wildest imaginings. There are beautiful old buildings and lots of trees and lovely people with facial piercings just about everywhere you look. Even the homeless people are somehow photogenic. Not that they are all terribly agreeable about having their picture taken. I think my first lesson of photojournalism is that your subjects may be difficult sometimes but it's all about what you're willing to go through for a good picture, whether it's arguing with an ornery old man, or crouching in odd positions, or losing your seat on the bus. I'm tired, ready to visit the Biergarten and then collapse in my bed upon returning to the hotel, but I've had one of the greatest mega-days of my life. Here are some pictures from Day 1.
Sniper demonstration in front of the hotel where Obama stayed during his visit.

Biergarten with cool orange tables.

Paper lamp store on the street by our hotel.

Alex by the Friendship Fountain.

Interesting individual with bike in Alexanderplatz.
